Moovandan Mango Plant

Mangifera indica, commonly known as mango, is a species of flowering. It is a large fruit tree, capable of growing to a height of 30 metres (100 feet). There are two distinct genetic populations in modern mangoes – the “Indian type” and the “Southeast Asian type”.

This variety is believed to have originated in Idukki District of Kerala. Even seedlings of this variety start bearing in the third year of planting, hence came the name ‘Moovandan’ meaning ‘third year’. It is generally a favourite in Kerala and each fruit weighs around 250 grams. Though the flesh is firm, fibrous and tangy it is liked by all.
