Avocado is an evergreen tropical flowering plant with green, pear-shaped fruit which belongs to the Lauraceae family and scientifically known as Persea americana. The fruit of the plant avocado is also called as butter fruit or avocado pear or alligator pear, it is a berry containing a single large seed. The term avocado refers to both tree and fruit. Avocado is a unique fruit as most of the fruits are dense in carbohydrates, whereas butter fruit is loaded with healthy fats rendering a host of healing health benefits.

As per the American Journal Of Clinical Nutrition, avocados are fruits which do not hold a significant glycemic index as it contains a minimal amount of carbs and high in healthy fats. The creamy and delicious butter fruit is popularly known as venney pazham in Tamil and Malayalam, Makhanphal in Hindi, Benne Hannu in Kanada and Venna Pandu in Telugu.

Velvet Apple (Budded)

Velvet Apples range in colour from golden-yellow to orange and purplish-red. They have a darkened, permanent calyx at the stem end, and are covered in tiny, brown hairs. Seedless varieties have a short, squat shape, like a persimmon, whereas varieties with seeds are more rounded. They can develop flat spots due to growing in tight clusters of two to four fruits, and can be anywhere from 5 to 10 centimetres wide. The skin is thin and can be tough and bitter and is generally discarded. In some varieties, the skin may have an unpleasant aroma that will dissipate once it’s removed. The white to off-white flesh is crisp when mature and will soften slightly as it ripens. The taste is sweet, and the flavour has been likened to banana-flavoured apples or strawberry-mango yogurt with hints of berries and bubble-gum. Darker, red fruits are considered sweeter than lighter coloured varieties.

Abiu (botanical name Pouteria caimito) is an exotic fruit tree that grows in Hawaii. A native of the Amazon region of South America, abiu (pronounced Aa-be-you) belongs to the Sapotaceae family and is commonly found in Brazil, Colombia, Peru, and Venezuela. Abiu tree requires a moist and warm climate. Flowers are hermaphroditic which means both sexes are present.

The fruit of the abiu tree is edible and considered one of the best of the sapotes due to having the sweet, caramel-like taste of sapodilla with a smoother texture.

Garcinia humilis, known commonly as achachairú or achacha, is a small, prolifically-fruiting tree related to the mangosteen. It grows in the southern part of the Amazon basin in the central area of Bolivia, but has recently been planted on a commercial scale in Burdekin, Australia. It seems to grow faster and yields better in the climatic conditions of Southern India.

The Pulasan, Nephelium mutabile Blume (family Sapindaceae), is a tropical fruit closely allied to the rambutan and sometimes confused with it. Usually eaten fresh, it is sweeter than the rambutan and lychee, but very rare outside Southeast Asia. The pulasan tree is an ornamental. It attains a height of 10-15 m and has a short trunk to 30-40 cm thick. The branch lets are brown and hairy when young.

The fruit is ovoid, 5-7.5 cm long, dark red, with its thick, leathery rind closely set with conical, blunt-tipped tubercles or thick, fleshy, straight spines, which are up to 1 cm long. There may be one or two small, undeveloped fruits nestled close to the stem. Within is the glistening, white or yellowish-white flesh (aril) to 1 cm thick, more or less clinging to the thin, grayish-brown seedcoat (testa) which separates from the seed. The flavour is generally much sweeter than that of the rambutan.

Rambutan is originated in Malaysia. Robust growth and consistently high yield observed in Kerala, hence ideal for commercial cultivation. Fruits are large in size, ovate in shape, and outer skin and hairs are red in colour, the fleshy portion wrapping the seed is translucent in colour. Sweet in taste with a slight mix of tanginess.

The Mangosteen fruit is round, dark purple to reddish purple, smooth and about 1 1/3 to 3 inches (3-8 cm.) in diameter. The fruit has a notable rosette at the apex composed of four to eight triangles shaped, flat remnants of the stigma. The flesh is snow white, juicy and soft, and may or may not contain seeds. The mangosteen fruit is acclaimed for its luscious, delectable, slightly acidic flavor. In fact, the fruit of the mangosteen is often referred to as the “queen of tropical fruit.”

Paneer Chamba/Water Apple/Wax Apple Plant

Water Apple is not actually an apple. It is a tropical fruit that grows in south-east Asia, including southern India, Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia. In Malaya and Indonesia, it will give two crops a year. Thailand variety water apples are big sizes and very sweet and delicious, while some varieties can be relatively round, others are somewhat pear-shaped, wide at the bottom, and very narrow at the top.
